UNLV/CSUN Preschool Awarded Highest Possible Quality Rating by Nevada Department of Education

The UNLV College of Education is pleased to announce that the UNLV/CSUN Preschool (Preschool), housed in the Lynn Bennett Early Childhood Education Center on the UNLV campus, has received a five-star Silver State Stars Quality Rating & Improvement System (QRIS) score from the Nevada Department of Education Office of Early Learning and Development (ELD). This exemplary rating makes the Preschool one of only seven 5-star rated early childhood education centers in the state of Nevada—only two of which are located in Las Vegas.

Implemented in 2014, the ELD Silver States Stars QRIS program defines “quality child care” and aims to create stronger learning environments for children using research-based, standardized criteria. The QRIS standards include quality indicators that expand licensing requirements on various areas in childcare settings including: program policies/procedures; administration/staff development; health and safety; and family and community partners. A five-star rating indicates a program of the highest quality, that far exceeds high quality standards.

“The UNLV/CSUN Preschool staff work incredibly hard to ensure that the high quality of education we provide to our children demonstrates caring commitment and research based practices,” Director Dr. Claire Tredwell said. “We are so proud to serve our community, and delighted to have received this five-star rating—It’s a testament to our work and ongoing commitment to provide the best possible model in early childhood education for all children.”

Research has shown that high-quality early childhood education (ECE) programs are key to establishing a solid foundation for a child’s cognitive development, academic readiness and social emotional skills. It has been proven that children who attend high-quality childcare or ECE programs have greater life stability, employment rates and earnings, higher IQs and reduced rates of poverty, crime and arrest rates.

Founded in 1974, the UNLV/CSUN Preschool is a comprehensive early childhood education program housed under the UNLV College of Education’s Educational and Clinical Studies Department. The Preschool serves local families while providing opportunities for teaching and training of new educators, as well as completing research to identify and design innovative practice in the ECE field. With its fully-inclusive ECE model, the Preschool’s program and curriculum serves up to 224 children aged 6-weeks to 5-years, and is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs (NAEYC).
