Research Expertise: Interventions that promote wellness & prevent negative outcomes in schools and communities: (a) peer influences that discourage school bullying and (b) realistic restorative justice and practices in schools, social justice in school psychology

Samuel Y. Song, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of School Psychology and came to the College of Education in 2016. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's School Psychology program in 2006, completed a professional psychology fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center of the Yale School of Medicine, completed a fellowship in social policy at the Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy of Yale University, and completed postdoctoral training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Song has held professorships at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Seattle University and has served as the Program Director of the School Psychology program and Chair of the Teaching, Learning, and Social Justice Department at Seattle University. He has practiced school psychology in traditional and alternative settings (e.g., clinic and hospital) and was a licensed psychologist-Health Service Provider in NC.

Dr. Song's scholarship and research focuses on strategies that promote healthy school cultures and climates for all children--including the "ecological minority"--and, integrating social justice in the field of school psychology. His programmatic research on school bullying intervention (Protective Peer Ecology Program; PPEco) has been funded in part by a variety of agencies over the years including the Spencer Foundation, the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, and the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). Dr. Song's work has been published in various scientific journals and books including the Journal of School Psychology, Best Practices in School Psychology (6th edition; National Association of School Psychologists, NASP), and the Journal of Experimental Education. Dr. Song co-edited the first book on social justice and school psychology, School Psychology and Social Justice: Conceptual Foundations and Tools for Practice (Routledge). He has two forthcoming works: (1) a co-edited special issue on restorative justice and practice in schools (2016; Journal of Educational and Psychological Consultation) and (2) a co-authored book on the profession of school psychology within a diversity and social justice framework to be published by the National Association of School Psychologists (2017).

He serves on a number of editorial boards including the official journal of the American Psychological Association's (APA) Division 16 the School Psychology Quarterly and previously on the Journal of School Psychology. He remains active in his profession having served as past President of the Trainers of School Psychologists (TSP), current member of the Council of Representatives of the APA, and a current member of the Executive Board of the Division 16 of the APA.
